“Chesterwood isn’t just where I’m recovering. It’s where I’m rebuilding.”
When Kisha woke up from a lumbar laminectomy surgery, she had a plan. Like anyone else, her goal was simple: head straight home to her husband, her son, and her beloved dog, Geiger. But sometimes, healing takes an unexpected detour. Once the pinched nerves in her spine were finally freed, Kisha realized her legs had become incredibly weak. Going home safely right away was no longer an option.
Suddenly faced with a list of 12 different rehabilitation facilities, Kisha felt the weight of an uncertain road ahead. In her early 50s, she worried about what inpatient skilled nursing would look like. But acting on a trusted friend’s recommendation, she chose Chesterwood Advanced Therapy Center—a choice she now calls a life-changing "reroute."
She admitted to Chesterwood Advanced Therapy scared, hurting, and struggling with the reality that she couldn't lift her left leg off the floor. To keep her friends and family connected during this unexpected chapter, she decided to document her daily triumphs and laughs on social media, beautifully titling her journey "Chronicles from Chesterwood."
Kisha brought two secret weapons to her rehab journey: fierce determination and an irreplaceable sense of humor. She immediately teamed up with Dylan, her physical therapist—whom she affectionately nicknamed “Dylan the Destroyer”—and grabbed the handles of her walker, proudly dubbed “Walker Texas Ranger.”
Together, they went to work, turning what could have been a daunting recovery into an inspiring comeback story.
Through sheer grit, laughter, and a refusal to quit, Kisha began hitting milestones that once felt miles away. She went from struggling with basic movement to riding the stationary bike for 20 minutes straight and walking 300 feet without needing a single break. Most meaningful of all? She completely conquered a flight of 17 steps—which happens to be the exact number waiting to welcome her back at home.
Reflecting on her time here, Kisha shared a beautiful reminder of what true healing looks like:
"Let me start by dispelling the myth that Chesterwood is 'just a retirement village.' It is so much more than that… For someone in their early 50s, I have never once felt out of place. The residents and the other short term therapy patients are some of the most friendly, kind hearted people I’ve ever met. And the staff? From the nurses to the aides, the therapists, maintenance crew, nutritionist, and social workers, basically everyone, I have never felt more safe, seen, and cared for. They listen to my needs. They remember my preferences. They treat me like a whole human being, not a room number."

John’s Journey Back to Mobility at Doverwood!
For 79-year-old Hamilton resident John, a sudden fall at home was a frustrating setback. The injury left him unable to bear weight on his right leg, requiring a hospital stay. When it came time to choose a rehabilitation facility, John knew exactly where to go. Having experienced the great care at Doverwood Rehab years ago, he gladly opted to return.
Today, John’s hard work in short-term rehab is paying off.
John threw himself into his physical and occupational therapy sessions, and the results speak for themselves. Thanks to his dedicated therapy plan, John is walking again and feeling stronger every day. He shares that he feels much more confident walking now with the help of the therapy team.
While John is grateful to the whole team, he gives a special shout-out to Katie for her outstanding guidance, as well as every nurse and aide who provided excellent care throughout his stay.
With his strength restored, John is excited to return home very soon to his wife of 51 years and finish up a few household projects he started before his fall.
